The Great G-Spot "UFO" DebateIn its August, 2001 issue the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) published a "Clinical Opinion" essay, "The G-Spot: A modern gynecological myth" by Pace University Psychologist Terence M. Hines, PhD. The "opinion" piece was quickly picked up and headlined by Reuters News Service. In the weeks that followed, virtually of the leading scholars and researchers in the G-Spot field conferred by email and many wrote formal letters-to-the-editor refuting Hine's claims. Others wrote directly to Dr. Hines. Listed below in chronological order are those important articles and letters. Interestingly, it has taken almost two decades for a scholarly debate to emerge in the public forum. We congratulate Dr. Hines for moving this discussion into the public spotlight.
August 2001: Psychologist Terence Hine's original "Clinical Opinion" essay, The G-Spot: A modern gynecologic myth. August 29, 2001: Steven Reinberg's news story, "The G Spot: A Gynecological UFO?" (Reuter's Health) Note that Hine's "clinical opinion" has suddenly been elevated to the status of "a new report"! April 2002: Garry Schubach, EdD, ACS's letter "The G-spot is the female prostate" was the first response published by AJOG, together with a reply from Hines. August 2002: After a full year's delay, AJOG finally published three letters to the editor (written several months earlier) from Rebecca Chalker, Beverly Whipple & John Perry, and Milan Zaviacic & Richard Ablin in response to Hine's original article. In addition, there is a brief reply by Hines, which interestingly enough, does not address the Zaviacic-Ablin letter. Fall 2002: Several other prominent researchers have written private letters to Dr. Hines. We are presently asking these scholars to allow us to publish their private correspondence with him, and will post what we are allowed to post. So Far: Letter from Jules Black, Australian Ob/Gyn.
